Ground Truth Alaska

IoT deployments in Alaska face several challenges: extreme temperatures, wind, months of darkness, freeze-thaw cycles, deep snow pack, corrosion, and curious critters! Infrastructure is thin - the power grid doesn’t cover much of Alaska, and neither do the cell towers.

In collaboration with GTA and Brunner MachineWorks, we designed a low cost wireless extensometer system for landslide instability monitoring. Based on Acconeer 60GHz Pulsed Coherent Radar sensor.

  • Instrument in a Jar! Custom Alaska proof enclosure…? so far so good.
  • Lithium battery + solar power
  • Custom LoRa Mesh protocol for longer battery life and longer distance. (no NOT Meshtastic ;)
  • Edge to Cloud solution w/ realtime telemetry
  • onboard microSD card for years of telemetry backup
  • Multiple backhaul options
    • Grid connected WiFi
    • Cellular CatM / NbIoT
    • Satellite data

Ground Truth Alaska is working on expanding this system at several sites in Alaska. instruments and base ready to go instrument labeled extensometer plot
